Which materials are useful, and for what?
- Water: candidate uses include drinking, thermal management, radiation shielding and processing into propulsion ingredients. Resource form and contamination matter.
- Oxygen: potentially useful for life support and oxidizer; oxygen may be released from compounds in regolith or generated by processing carbon dioxide.
- Hydrogen and other volatiles: potentially useful as chemical feedstocks or energy-related materials, but difficult storage can dominate the system.
- Iron, nickel and other metals: candidates for manufacturing and structural feedstock when composition and processing are demonstrated.
- Bulk regolith: may be used in construction or shielding applications even without purification into valuable metals.
Does every asteroid contain these resources?
No. Asteroid populations vary widely in composition and physical structure. Bennu samples show carbon-rich and water-related material, whereas NASA describes Apophis as a stony asteroid. Do not use findings from one asteroid as a resource estimate for another. Measurements of a remote target may be incomplete until closer observations or sampling. See asteroid mining and Apophis facts.
Why is the richest material not always the best target?
A resource can look attractive chemically and still be expensive or impossible to recover at useful scale. The complete assessment includes trajectory access, excavation or collection difficulty, processing temperature, energy per kilogram, storage losses, autonomous operating duration, and where the customer needs the product.
Concentration, form, location and recovery process must be supported by evidence before speaking of reserves or economic value.
Has any mission made a useful product in space?
NASA’s MOXIE produced oxygen from the Martian atmosphere during the Perseverance mission, a demonstration of ISRU. It did not operate as a commercial oxygen supplier. NASA’s ISRU work also studies regolith acquisition, water capture and oxygen processing. These experiments matter because each closes a small piece of a much larger production chain.

Why would a planetary resource and defense firm study this?
Resource characterization, autonomous navigation and long-duration operations can all contribute to future planetary missions. MineSpace’s Mission Zero objective is a sustained companion position beside Apophis; extraction is not part of the publicly described primary objective. Its simulation is an exploration of mission concepts, not a measurement of Apophis resource value.
